2009 KLPGA KB Star Tour #1 Rd 3

Sun Ju Ahn entered the final round of the KB Star Tour event with a three shot lead over the field, and a seven shot lead over two time winner Hee Kyung Seo.  Seo had made up big deficits before in her career, including a six shot comeback just the previous week at the Korean Women’s Open.  Could she pull off another bit of magic for her third straight win?

The conditions were certainly not easy, and even top players struggled.  So Yeon Ryu shot a punishing 78, while Ha Neul Kim limped in with a 79.  So Ahn knew that her lead was far from safe.

Despite the tough conditions, Seo got out to a great start.  She made three birdies early to move to 6 under.  Ahn, however birdied her first two holes, but made a bogey and a double soon after to fall to 9 under.  What had started as a 7 shot lead was down to three after 8 holes.

Could it possibly happen again?  Could Seo actually pull off another miraculous comeback to win a tournament?  Well, she made bogey at 9, but birdied 11 to again move to within three.

Ahn was hanging in with pars.  On the par 5 14th, however, Seo made bogey while Ahn made birdie, and it looked like the win was in the bag for Big Mama.

Not so fast!  Seo recovered from her mistake with birdies on 15 and 16 to move 7 under. But Ahn was fighting her every step of the way, making a birdie on 15 and 17 to put the tournament out of reach.  Just when it looked like Seo might take her down, Sun Ju raised her game another notch to claim the trophy.  Her final score of 12 under gave her a six shot win.

Congratulations to Sun Ju Ahn on her first win of 2009, and to Hee Kyung Seo, who gave it everything she had to try to keep her streak alive.  Interestingly, it was Ahn who had ended Ji Yai Shin’s bid to win 4 straight in 2007, and now she ended Seo’s bid for three straight.  Is she the KLPGA’s Giant Killer?
