2009 KLPGA Doosan Match Play Championship

The next event on the KLPGA calendar is the Doosan Match Play Championship.  This is the only match play tournament on the KLPGA calendar.  Last year’s event was won by Bo Kyung Kim, who beat Rookie of the Year He Yong Choi in the final round.  Will we have another surprise winner this year?  Or will one of the tour’s superstars come through with the title?
They held a special event where the top seeds drew their matches for the week.  Here’s how things ended up.  I will break the match ups down by section, with possible quarterfinal matchups mentioned, as well as the first match for each player.

Quarter #1:
#1 Hee Kyung Seo (vs. #64 Bo Ri Lee)
#8 Bo Kyung Kim (vs. #57 So Young Kim 2)

Other significant players in this section: #33 Ha Na Chae, #17 Ji Na Lim, #24 Young Ran Jo

This could get pretty interesting if Hee Kyung Seo, the best player on tour, ends up playing the defending champ in the quarters.  Seo had not yet started her amazing run when this event was played last year, so it’s hard to know just how well she will take to this format.  Kim and Seo also recently duked it out for the Korean Women’s Open title, with Seo finally putting her away on the last hole.  Could we see a rematch?

Quarter #2:
#4 Sun Ju Ahn (vs. #61 Chae Eun Chung)
#5 So Yeon Ryu (vs. #60 Hyun Hwa Shim)

Other notables: Soo Young Moon (#20), Rookie star Soo Jin Yang (#37) and Shin Ae Ahn (#44) and tour winner Chae Ah Oh (#21).

This seems like a pretty tough section with a bunch of name players.  Ryu started the year better than Ahn, but Ahn is coming off a win; it’s hard to call a favorite here.  Especially since Ryu played a LOT of match play style events as an amateur.

Quarter #3:
#2 Ha Neul Kim (vs. #63 Hyun Joo Lee)
#7 Ran Hong (vs. #58 Seon Hwa Lee 2)

Other notables: former LPGAers Hae Jung Kim (#15) and Honey Moon (#18), promising 2nd year players Anna Oh (#50) and Ae Ri Pyun (#10), tour winner Jung Eun Lee 5 (#26)

Ran Hong gets a tough match up right out of the gate against a solid rookie player, Seon Hwa Lee 2.  Hae Jung Kim and Anna Oh also go against each other in round 1.  Ha Neul Kim is definitely the class of this section, though, if she can play up to her level.

Quarter #4:
#3 He Yong Choi (vs. #62 Eun Bi Jang)
#6 Hye Youn Kim (vs. #59 Aram Cho)

Other notables: Hye In Lee (#30), Bobea Park (#11), Il Hee Lee (#22).

This seems like the weakest of the four sections to me.  Hye Youn Kim gets a tough match up with Aram Cho, a former LPGA player, right out of the gate.  Both won events in 2008, although Cho is far less consistent than Kim.  He Yong Choi was runner up last year, and looks good to get through this section, except she has been playing poorly so far in 2009.

The action starts Thursday, May 21st and runs through Sunday.
