KLPGA: SBS Charity Women’s Open Rd 1

After two months of inactivity, the KLPGA returns this weekend with the SBS Charity Women’s Open.  The event runs from August 14 – 16th.  The defending champion is Hee Kyung Seo; this was the site of the first of her eight career wins.  Seo comes into the event this year in the lead in the Player of the Year race, and second on the money list.  So Yeon Ryu leads that competition, and is second in the POY standings.  The battle is on between these two stars; will one of them seize momentum first now that the season has resumed, or will one of the other top KLPGA stars step up to challenge them?

Meanwhile, the LPGA is also taking a few weeks off for the Solheim Cup, meaning we will be seeing a lot of Korean stars from that tour over the next couple of KLPGA tournaments.  This week a plethora of LPGA names is in the field.  Among the most notable are US Women’s Open champ Eun Hee Ji, former KLPGA tour leaders Soo Yun Kang, Il Mi Chung and Kyeong Bae, as well as other names like Jee Young Lee, Hee Young Park and Young Kim.  So many LPGA players, in fact, that’s it’s practically like a normal LPGA event as much as a KLPGA tour stop!

One of the top KLPGA stars who has struggled this season is Ha Neul Kim.  Last year, Kim won three times and was third on the money list, but she has not really been a factor at all on tour in 2009.  On day one, Kim had an early tee time, and took advantage to post a 66 and the early lead.  Her round consisted of six birdies and no bogies.

A little later in the day she was joined at the top by Sun Ju Ahn and Bo Mi Lee.  Lee has had a strong 2009 so far but is still searching for her first win.  Ahn has been fantastic so far this year, leading the league in scoring average and right in the hunt for Player of the Year.  Another win would definitely make her a threat for that title.

Among the LPGA stars, the top name was Kyeong Bae, who carded a 67 that consisted of five birdies and no bogies.  She was the only LPGA player in the top ten, amazingly.  After her, there were several LPGA stars tied for 12th three shots back, including Soo Yun Kang, Young Kim and Hee Young Park.

Among the other top KLPGA players, Hee Kyung Seo and So Yeon Ryu started the week with 69s as well.
