KLPGA: SBS Charity Women’s Open Rd 2

Round 1 started with three players tied for the lead: Ha Neul Kim, Sun Ju Ahn and Bo Mi Lee.  For Kim in particular, it was a rare chance for her to lead an event in 2009, and perhaps for her to get her game back on track.  Interestingly, both Ahn and Lee would go on to have poor Saturdays, both shooting over par to fall down the leaderboard.  Kim, however, seemed to be avoiding that curse, at least at first.  After 11 holes, she found herself 2 under par for the day and 8 under total, good for the lead at the time.

Unfortunately, Ha Neul did not finish her day well.  She made a bogey on the par 5 12th, but what really killed her was a double bogey on the final hole.  At the time she was at 7 under and tied for the lead, but that final mistake knocked her back to 5 under, two shots back.  The good news is, she still has one round to try to right the ship, and is still very much in the hunt.  But she could have been in such better shape with a par on the final hole.

When the action concluded on Saturday, three players stood tied for the lead at 7 under.  Two were LPGA players who had at one point been top players on the KLPGA,  Kyeong Bae and Il Mi Chung, while the third is a current KLPGA star player, Ran Hong.  Bae has had a great season to date in America, a comeback of sorts after a weak 2008.  But she still hasn’t claimed a trophy in 2009, so would love to change that here.  In fact, none of the three leaders has won this year.

Watch out, though, for there is some KLPGA horsepower just a little behind the leaders.  Tied for 4th one shot back is defending champ Hee Kyung Seo, who would like nothing better than to repeat as champion at the event where she first broke into the winner’s circle.

Two shots back is money list leader So Yeon Ryu looking for her third straight win and fourth win in five starts.

One more round left, a crowded leaderboard with a bunch of stars in contention — sounds like a recipe for an exciting Sunday!
