KLPGA: SBS Charity Women’s Open Rd 3

There was a crowded leaderboard entering the final round of the SBS Open.  In the first round, three stars had been tied for the lead.  In the second round, three different stars took over.  Would any of those six players be on top at the end, or would still another different player claim the trophy?

The three at the top entering round 3 were Il Mi Chung, Kyeong Bae (both now playing on the LPGA) and Ran Hong, a KLPGA star trying to take the next step in her career.  For Hong, that step would not happen on this day; she shot a 79 and plunged down the leaderboard.  But Chung and Bae had much better Sundays.

Il Mi had three early birdies to move to 10 under and the lead.  Bae played all right, but was only one over on her front nine.  Chung looked like perhaps she might be taking home the trophy this day.

But there were several superstars breathing down her neck who wanted to make that tough, notably So Yeon Ryu and Hee Kyung Seo. Seo is the defending champion, and was just a shot behind the leaders entering Sunday, while Ryu was just two shots back.  But Seo was only one under on the front nine, still three shots behind Chung.  If she were going to win, she would have to make a push on the back nine.

Ryu, meanwhile, has won three of the last four events on tour, including the last two.  She has gotten used to being in the mix on Sunday, and got out to a great start in round three to put the heat on Chung.  Ryu had birdie on her first two holes, bogey on five, then four straight birdies to go out in a sizzling 31.  This moved her to 10 under and a tie with Chung for the lead.

As the back nine continued, it increasingly became a battle between the teenaged Ryu and Chung, one of the oldest players in the field.  Chung bogied 8 to fall back to 9 under, but a birdie on 13 moved her back to 10 under.  Ryu, meanwhile, kept making pars to stay at 10 under.

When Ryu made bogey on 16, it looked as though that might be it for her, but she hung in there and made a clutch birdie on the last hole to secure the clubhouse lead at 10 under.  Chung needed to finish her last couple of holes in par or better to secure a playoff.

But Chung made bogey on 17, and was not able to birdie 18.  And so, for the fourth time in the last five events, the winner at the end of the week was So Yeon Ryu.  Congratulations!

Ryu is on an incredible tear right now.  Are we witnessing the birth of a superstar?  Could be!  Only a very select group of women have ever won three times in a row on the KLPGA tour.  If she can win her next event, she will be etching her name in the record books.  The sky really seems to be the limit for So Yeon Ryu!
