KLPGA: 2009 Hite Cup rd 1

The KLPGA returns to action with a rare 4 round event from October 15 – 18th.  The tournament is the Hite Cup, one of the most popular events on tour each year.  Sponsored by the beer company Hite, the Hite Cup is known for attracting a field of top talent from around the world, and this year is no different.  What is different is that the event has officially been elevated to Major status, becoming the fourth KLPGA Major this season (and the third to be played).

The defending champion is world #2 Ji Yai Shin, who is returning to defend her title, her first event in Korea since joining the LPGA full time.

Also on hand will be several Korean stars from the LPGA, including recent Samsung winner Na Yeon Choi, Hee Young Park, Il Mi Chung, US Women’s Open champs Eun Hee Ji and Inbee Park, Soo Yun Kang, Song Hee Kim, and Jin Joo Hong.  Coming over from the JLPGA are top stars including Ji Hee Lee and Mi Jeong Jeon, while several amateur stars will also be in the field, notably Hana Jang.

The scoring was tough on day one, with only 6 players shooting under par.  Four players were tied for the lead at 2 under par by the end of the day, two of whom were amateurs.  Included in that group was Hana Jang, one of the top amateurs in the country, and a 14 year old amateur named Hyo Joo Kim.  The two pros were KLPGA players Chae Young Yoon and Hye Jin Jung.

Defending champ Shin got off to a slow start with a 2 over par 74, but she’s only four shots back, which is not too bad with three rounds to go.
