2010 Taeyoung Cup Korean Women’s Open Rd 3

Round 1 of this year’s first Major on the KLPGA tour saw the defending champion Hee Kyung Seo shoot a miserable 76 en route to missing the cut.  In the second round, the second best player on tour fell apart.  So Yeon Ryu also shot a 76, and would wind up finishing tied for 13th.

The theme continued right into the third round.  Entering Sunday, the best player still in contention was also the top player in the Player of the Year standings, Bo Mi Lee.  But Lee caught the same bug the other favorites did, shooting an ill timed 74 to fall out of the lead.  She would not claim her first career Major on this day, either.

In the end, the tournament became somewhat of a free for all.  Second round leader Bo Kyung Kim shot a 76 to fade from the top, as did Young Ran Jo, who shot a crushing 78.  Former LPGA player Jin Joo Hong was over par as well.

Which left several amateurs, second year tour teenager Soo Jin Yang and former LPGA player Sung Ah Yim to duke it out for the title.

Amazingly, it all came down to the last few holes.  Yang had the lead and looked like she had the trophy locked up.  But a bogey on 16 knocked her back into a tie with Sung Ah Yim.  Yim could not capitalize, making two bogies in her final three holes.

The leaderboard was fairly shocking by this point.  Yang sat at 5 under and needed par to pretty much wrap up the title.  Eun Joo Lee, an amateur, had finished at 4 under already.  Another amateur, Soo Yeon Kim, was at 4 under with a chance to move to 5 under on the final hole.  Still another amateur, Jung Eun Han, had a shot at the win as well.  Han had made an enormous charge earlier in the day, going 32 on the front nine and making yet another birdie on hole 12 to move all the way to 7 under par.  But Han collapsed with two bogies and two double bogies in her final five holes, finishing tied for 8th.

It came down to Yang and the final hole, but Yang could not make the par.  Her bogey dropped her into a tie for the clubhouse lead with Lee.  Moments later, the third amateur Soo Yeon Kim made double bogey on 18 to fall out of a tie for the lead.  So both Yang and Kim had had a chance to win it all and faltered on the final hole.

What ended up happening was a playoff between Soo Jin Yang and Eun Joo Lee, where they would repeatedly play the 18th hole until a player won.  Both players were clearly nervous, as they both bogied the first playoff hole.  They parred it the second time through.

Finally on the third go round, Yang managed a par which Lee couldn’t match.  The amateur had made a game attempt, but in the end it was 18 year old Soo Jin Yang who claimed her tour’s biggest prize.  Congratulations to her on what may end up being a life changing win!
